Winter Books and Songs

Last time I collected a book/song list it was during the dead heat of summer, when going outside meant evaporating into the concrete. Now it is winter, and a blustery chill has finally descended upon LA (in the evenings at least). Therefore, RC recommends staying out of the cold (especially if you are reading this on the east coast), snuggling into a soft couch, and reading some dark, cynical literature.

Crime and Punishment

[mp3]
The Black Lips -
Gentle Violence

Catch 22

[mp3]
Modest Mouse - Exit Does Not Exist

Mao II

[mp3] We Are Wolves -
T.R.O.U.B.L.E.

Slaughterhouse Five

[mp3] Prodigy - Firestarter

East of Eden

[mp3]Annuals - Brother

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

[mp3] Swan Lake - The Freedom

Whose reading East of Eden? That happens to be one of my all-time favorites. I confess to not knowing the Annuals song, so I shall give it a spin, and maybe re-read the Steinbeck sometime soon.

Having only read Crime & Punishment, I can totally see how it's a winter book (though very dark at times and with one of the most depressing endings I've read), but what the heck is Firestarter doing on there? That's the randomest winter song of the ones you've posted :p

And DFTB is cool. Btw, you coming to the show tonight?

Will - This is my list. I finished East of Eden a few weeks back (had picked it up several times, but just never got through it), and it's definitely in my top five. The Annuals are great, so check them out.

Arpit - The whole book/song coupling has to do with mutual themes. Slaughterhouse Five is about the firebombing of Dresden - thus Firestarter.

I should be coming to the show tonight.

Ah gotcha - I was wondering how the theme of Firestarter matched up with winter. Maybe I ought to read the book :p

Cool - see ya tonight then!

"Firestarter" works with winter regardless. It's cold, start a fire. Plus it's a kickass song.

Lol.. yeah, yeah, I guess it does. I just meant the tempo and sound of it - it's more a summer song when you wanna go expend energy - my winter playlist is all folksy stuff - stuff you can relax to by the fire you just started :)
